Memorial Day – Remember the “risk” that preserves our Nation

The purpose of the original Memorial Day was to honor those who died in the Civil War. Its purpose today has evolved into remembering and honoring all who have died in the service of our country. What better way is there to honor and remember them than to honor and remember their living comrades, those men and women who have and are currently honorably serving in America’s Armed Forces.

Branson is not and was not flooded

Noah might have seen more rain quicker than the Branson area did Easter Weekend and into the first part of Easter Week, but the Ole Seagull hasn’t. If that rainfall wasn’t what some people refer to as an “Act of God” then nothing is. There wasn’t anything anyone on this earth could have done to prevent the comparatively minimal flooding that resulted in the low-lying areas below Table Rock Dam on Lake Taneycomo and its tributaries from that rain and the record releases of water from Table Rock Dam it caused, but “Branson” was never flooded.

Why can’t we have the same peaceful death as a pet or Timothy McVeigh?

On June 11, 2001, Timothy McVeigh, the man who killed 168 people and injured 450 more when he bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995 was executed by lethal injection at 7:14 a.m. in the federal execution chamber of U.S. Federal Penitentiary at Terre Haute, Indiana. Most reasonable people would assume he died relatively painlessly and quickly. …

Vision, perseverance, character and values make College of the Ozarks a beacon

America is full of liberal arts colleges, some good and some bad, some, if not most very liberal and some conservative, but there is only one that has the perseverance to persistently embrace the character and values that make Branson and the Ozarks so special. That college, has both the heart of a leader and of a servant and has at all times been a beacon for quality education, character development, a strong work ethic, the American spirit and values and faith in God. That college is the College of the Ozarks (C of O).

America’s “nobleness” and hope – Her Teachers!

Dedication: As another school year winds to its close, may it remind us all of how valuable our Teachers are to our children, community and the future of our nation.

In terms of a “profession,” America’s future does not lie in the hands of Presidents, politicians, lawyers, doctors, accountants, and other leaders. Her future lies in the hands of the professionals who will be teaching those who will become the future Presidents, politicians, lawyers, doctors, accountants and other leaders, America’s Teachers.

I would vote for the $42.9 million school bond issue, but…

Different individuals could complete that sentence in a variety of ways most of which would not be timely or efficient in terms of solving the problem which is, in an Ole Seagull’s mind, “Making sure our ‘children’ and their teachers have physical facilities that will enhance the educational process not detract from it.” It’s obvious that it takes more physical facilitie …

Can America compete in the “Super Bowl of Nations?”

Tens of millions of Americans will watch the “Green Bay Packers” and “Pittsburgh Steelers” play in the Super Bowl today with millions cheering for one team or the other to win. However, if they were honest with themselves, “being truthful in what they say and do,” many would put a “steely” faced grin on their “packed” stuffed faces and realize that the game can only end one way. The same way our great Nation will end. …

An Ole Seagull apologizes – there really is only one honorable way

An Ole Seagull would apologize to Mr. Steve Peet of the Branson Airport and simply say, ” I am sorry. In terms of the Supplemental Agreement, you were right sir and I was wrong.” To the Branson Board of Aldermen (Board) an Ole Seagull would say, “He was wrong when he expressed his opinion relative to what he believed you intended to do when you approved the Supplemental Agreement, pertaining to the potential payment of $2 million a year to the Branson Airport under the Original 2006 Pay for Performance Agreement (Original Agreement), in the summer of 2010. For that he is sorry. At the end of the day, he missed something he wished he didn’t and for that he apologizes to his readers. …

Can there be Christmas without CHRISTmas?

The “Grinch” never came any closer to stealing the true meaning of Christmas than has trying to be “politically correct.” In recent years there has been a strong move to change the traditional Christmas greeting of “Merry Christmas” to the “politically correct” terminology of “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings.”

Thanksgiving is all about to whom the “Thanks” is “given!”

Common sense tells an Ole Seagull that something celebrated as “Thanksgiving Day” should be a day of “giving thanks.”  Generally speaking, who among us says “thank you” to “no one?” When thanks is given it is for something and is “given” to the person or entity believed to have provided that something.
